{"id":770,"date":"2018-07-13T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2018-07-13T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/weebly-import-post-12"},"modified":"2026-06-17T01:43:24","modified_gmt":"2026-06-17T01:43:24","slug":"an-exciting-day-of-butterflies-and-birds-at-coyote-hills","status":"publish","type":"wingbeat","link":"https:\/\/sfbbo-test.twomoons.systems\/staging\/1924\/wingbeat\/an-exciting-day-of-butterflies-and-birds-at-coyote-hills\/","title":{"rendered":"An Exciting Day of Butterflies and Birds at Coyote Hills"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"paragraph\"><strong>\u200b<\/strong><strong>By Guest Blogger Marisa Still<\/strong><\/div> <div><div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-7387b849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\"><div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\"><figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Picture\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sfbbo-test.twomoons.systems\/staging\/1924\/wp-content\/uploads\/weebly-migration\/img-20170811-154808556_1_orig.jpg?ssl=1\"\/><\/figure><\/div><div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\"><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span>June 3rd\u00a0was one of those beautiful spring days on the verge of summer &#8211; people were out, the sun was out, and a few of us went bird and butterfly watching.<\/span><br\/><br\/><span>The\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apm.activecommunities.com\/ebparks\/activity_search\/butterfly-bird-festival\/20673?\" target=\"_blank\">Bird and Butterfly Festival<\/a><span>\u00a0had the gorgeous backdrop of\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ebparks.org\/parks\/coyote_hills\/\" target=\"_blank\">Coyote Hills Regional Park<\/a><span>\u00a0in Fremont with a stunning marsh where I would help with two nature walks for SFBBO.\u00a0I met my walk co-leader\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sfbbo-test.twomoons.systems\/staging\/1924\/our-board.html\">Jan Hintermeister<\/a><span>\u00a0near the spot where our walk would begin and we both felt optimistic.\u00a0After meeting our fairly large group, we\u00a0started our first walk by meeting in the shade\u00a0\u200b<\/span><span>to play a game I like to play with my &#8230;<\/span><\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n<!--more-->\n\n  <div class=\"paragraph\"><span>students. We all tricked each other by changing our appearance for a partner and then trying to guess what changed as a way to sharpen our observation skills. It was also a nice time to laugh with our newly formed group and break the ice.<br\/><br\/>We had people of all ages eager to know more about birds and butterflies. It helped that\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ebparks.org\/activities\/naturalists\/mobile_education_programs.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Claudia Munoz<\/a><span>\u00a0from East Bay Regional Parks trailed behind us with a wagon of binoculars and bird guides for people to use.<\/span><br\/><\/div> <div> <figure class=\"wp-block-gallery wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\"><figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sfbbo-test.twomoons.systems\/staging\/1924\/wp-content\/uploads\/weebly-migration\/img-2483.jpg?ssl=1\"\/><\/figure><figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sfbbo-test.twomoons.systems\/staging\/1924\/wp-content\/uploads\/weebly-migration\/img-2526.jpg?ssl=1\"\/><\/figure><\/figure>\n<\/div> <div class=\"paragraph\"><span>We saw\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.allaboutbirds.org\/guide\/Snowy_Egret\/id\" target=\"_blank\">Snowy<\/a><span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.allaboutbirds.org\/guide\/Great_Egret\/overview\" target=\"_blank\">Great Egrets<\/a><span>\u00a0and observed the differences between the two. We saw and heard\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.allaboutbirds.org\/guide\/Common_Grackle\/id\" target=\"_blank\">Common Grackles<\/a><span>, glimpsed a\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.allaboutbirds.org\/guide\/Pied-billed_Grebe\/id\" target=\"_blank\">Pied-billed Grebe<\/a><span>\u00a0from a platform, and watched\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.allaboutbirds.org\/guide\/Tree_Swallow\/id\" target=\"_blank\">Tree Swallows<\/a><span>\u00a0swoop. There was a great show of\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.allaboutbirds.org\/guide\/American_White_Pelican\/id\" target=\"_blank\">White Pelicans<\/a><span>, too, as we finished the first walk.<\/span><br\/><span>\u00a0<\/span><br\/><span>The second walk was different, which was also a treat. We saw the same things, and different things &#8211; I&#8217;m always amazed at how long bird watching stays exciting!
