Two mornings later, just before first light, another one called; and when I went to the window to listen more closely, there were actually two, giving the call-and-response sounds that indicate the beginnings of true fall and, if we\u2019re lucky, the possibility of a nest nearby come early spring.<br\/><br\/>That, coupled with the approach of Halloween and all of its symbols (including that sometimes eerie call), reminded me of a new book from the author of <em>Hawk Rising<\/em> and <em>Coyote Moon &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Whoo-Ku-Haiku-Great-Horned-Story\/dp\/0399548424\/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&amp;keywords=Whoo-Ku+Haiku%3B+A+Great+Horned+Owl+Story.&amp;qid=1604788465&amp;sr=8-1\" target=\"_blank\">Whoo-Ku: A Great Horned Owl Story<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>by Maria Gianferrari and illustrated by Jonathan Voss.\u00a0<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n<!--more-->\n\n  <div class=\"paragraph\">Owls meet poetry.<br\/>Haiku takes them through a year,<br\/>And with great impact.<br\/>\u00a0<br\/>My attempt is less accurate than Gianferrari\u2019s twenty-four haiku, which follow a pair of Great Horned Owls through nesting season as they find and refurbish a squirrel\u2019s nest, lay their eggs, face a string of dangers, and eventually see their two fledglings disperse to make their own way in the world. Voss\u2019s paintings capture the drama of darkness and danger as well as the soft safety of mother\u2019s wings. For the very young, the story is all in the pictures and the telling. Older children will linger over the dramatic paintings but may also pick up on the Japanese poetic form. Teachers often introduce haiku \u2013 poems in three lines of seven, five, and seven syllables, traditionally linked into long, related strings that tell a story \u2013 as a way of making poetry more accessible or as a point of access to learning more about Japan.<\/div> <div> <figure class=\"wp-block-gallery wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\"><figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sfbbo-test.twomoons.systems\/staging\/1924\/wp-content\/uploads\/weebly-migration\/91kxmumro4l.jpg?ssl=1\"\/><\/figure><figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sfbbo-test.twomoons.systems\/staging\/1924\/wp-content\/uploads\/weebly-migration\/91mal5wrl4l.jpg?ssl=1\"\/><\/figure><figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sfbbo-test.twomoons.systems\/staging\/1924\/wp-content\/uploads\/weebly-migration\/owl4-e1583690544556.jpg?ssl=1\"\/><\/figure><\/figure>\n<\/div> <div class=\"paragraph\">\u200bIn this case, the introduction is to the details of early life for Great Horned Owls. And it\u2019s not an easy life.\u00a0 Three eggs are laid in the refurbished squirrel\u2019s nest; one is dislodged in a crow attack and eaten by a raccoon on the ground. Two owlets hatch safely, but one has a very narrow escape after a trial flight and nearly becomes casualty number two. An adult may be needed, both for comfort (which author and illustrator skillfully restore) and to explain that one reason why birds lay several eggs is that not all of their babies survive the dangers inherent in a wild life.<br\/>\u00a0<br\/>After the story\u2019s comfortable conclusion, two pages of additional information, including books, websites, videos and a webcam site are provided for those curious or old enough to want more.
